Zikula / Themes

BlankTheme 0.9

Extension type: Theme
Extension originally created by nestormateo on Mar 18, 2009

Description
BlankTheme aims to become a comprehensive Theme Development Framework for the Zikula Application Framework. Its objective is to ease the development of new Zikula themes as well as the porting of open source themes.
BlankTheme serves as a theme where we adapt its templates and styles to our web design. The plus is to have its features like easy layout configuration, full CSS control of any screen in our site and more advantages by default. We can also update our themes with ease thanks to Subversion (SVN).

BlankTheme project also aims to encourage to the community to have a central repository of template customizations and build alternatives to the default styles of our widely used modules.

Play with it, Enjoy it and give it some Feedback icon_wink

Essentially, BlankTheme is a CSS Framework, much like 960.gs.

not a theme engine
BlankTheme is not a theme engine (a la Xanthia/Theme that is integral to Zikula). BlankTheme is a framework on which you can build your own theme. Think in layers: layer 1: Zikula. layer 2: Xanthia/XTE/Theme layer 3: BlankTheme. layer 4: your pretty theme

BlankTheme builds on YAML CSS framework (yaml.de) to make a theme that uses the standards Zikula Theme engine.
It is a basis for developing your own themes, but with a lot of cross-browser issues solved. Easier templating for different layouts in various modules (1 column, 2, 3, grid, etc).

If you like CSS frameworks, you can use BlankTheme as an already ready made basis in Zikula to make your own theme.

Or use of of the already converted open source themes (thank you Mateo icon_wink ). Hey, even the zikula.org site is using BlankTheme for the theme icon_smile

Fixed or Flexible?
Is this a fixed width or a flexible width theme? I am working on developing a flexible width theme for my site from a good starting point(currently looking at YUI Grid, but not totally invested in that either).

Flexible
That was the more important reason to choose YAML as our base CSS framework. Currently, our ported themes shows many ways to build themes and BluePigment is a flexible-width one. Anyways, many of them can be flexible-width, except the ones with fixed design images.

The advantage with BlankTheme are also its features like the configurable layouts, that's a nice Xanthia magic trick icon_wink

A little bad news
There was a bug with clears in the main content when the main column is static. This issue doesn't affect to themes with floating columns, but I've began to use the static main column due to its flexibility, and just today I saw the cause of problem and its solution.

Thanks to Dirk Jesse for his help and his docs!

The change is pretty minor, and IMHO doesn't makes sense to release 0.9.1 for this: changeset.

Fix your theme if you're using static cols.
Also read the ticket #22.
My apologies and greetings

Still Confused
So is BlankTheme a theme that you just re-name and adjust to your personal specs? Or is it a CSS-Framework? (or is it BOTH?!)

I'm still confused... sorry.

Just a theme
It's a theme that uses a CSS framework of the ones available out there, that aims to be the beginning (the base) of our work for custom graphic designs.

The features of the CSS framework are available to use in the custom stylesheets of course (layout.css and content.css in this case)

Greetings icon_wink
