How to make Zikula 1.4 release even more successful  Bottom

  • I collected some ideas how to make the release 1.4 and Zikula in general even more successful:

    1. The 1.4 release will be the second module break in a short time. IMHO after this release there should not be another one soon again. So please just release 1.4 if your are sure that the module structure is finish.

    2. Build a release team. This team should prepare a release text that we can send to common newspages. This team can also prepare a list of this pages.

    3. Make a list of very important modules. Dont release Zikula 1.4 before this modules are working. Here some suggestions for this list: Clip, Pages, News, Scribite, Dizkus, Wikula, PostCalendar, Piwik, Socialise, EZComments, Formicula, Profile and a media module.

    4. Publish the roadmaps on the homepage.

    5. Publish a table with the planed support dates on the homepage. (like here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Debian)

    6. Write a user, module developer and theme developer documentation. Dont write in the Wiki. Create one like sphinx so we create documentations for different versions. Make translations of the documentations. Do not publish Zikula 1.4 before at least the user documentation in english is finish.

    7. Improve Scribite by a upload manager and link chooser. This IMHO nowadays default. I already prepare something like that.

    9. Redesign the homepage and create a nice place to share modules and themes on it.

    10. Dont publish the Zikula 1.4 before the most important translations are ready.

    11. Dont release Zikula 1.4 before we have a good Smarty to twig conversation script.

    12. Because this will take time (I dont think that we can release Zikula 1.4 before Q4/12) continue meanwhile bug fixing for Zikula 1.3.3 Dont give the user the feeling that we are just focused on the new release.

    13. Last but not least call Zikula 1.4 Zikula 2.0. There are so many chances and incompatibilities that I think this would make sense.

  • Big applause...
  • Sounds good. The development of Zikula went pretty quick and good in the past 2 years, so I guess it's getting time to increase or develop the community.

I myself was planning to start in a couple of weeks with an online Zikula tutorial for dummies on my Website in English and German, including installation and configurations of modules, and templates.

I only need to finish the upgrade to Zikula 1.3.3 and translate all my English content into German.

Once started with the tutorial I let you guys know and if there are parts you like you are free to grab them.

  • @mazdev:
Nedd (a little) help while translating in german?
  • @frw

Thanks, I hope not. It's a long time ago when I visited the school, and the German grammar had some little changes, but I hope I will be able to manage it.

For the upcoming Tutorial I will be glad to accept your offer for the flow of the sentences, due to the fact that I migrated 17 years ago to Australia and Asia and suffer a lack of practice.

This is important, and I could add to the list, it wasn't done for the release of 1.3 and has led to very slow adoption of 1.3 as far as I can tell.

In GitHub I'm now seeing some modules where the commits are being done to change the module to 1.4+ status. In those modules that means I can't use the modules latest GitHub in 1.3+, it's getting confusing.

If a module gets updated to 1.4 in GitHub can we have a branch or separate download that still works in 1.3?

I've built new sites in 1.3 but haven't been successful yet in updating any sites from 1.2 to 1.3, (and some sites started with PN .63 !) now it just doesn't seem worth the effort and I'll wait and update to 1.4 someday.

It's a shame, because there is so much good stuff in 1.3, it really is hugely better than 1.2, and I trust that 1.4 must be better still or so much effort wouldn't already be going into it before 1.3 is even commonly used, even by Zikula.or itself.

What should the common user do?

  • I'd be curious to know which modules are in 1.4-development stages. I've not seen any.
  • Two I can remember, I don't think they are the only ones I ran into when collecting modules for a 1.3 site.
