Today we are proud and excited to announce the results of our renaming process. As of today, our project is called the Zikula Application Framework. In partnership with Strategic Name Development, a brand consultancy firm, we worked to develop a new name which was vibrant, modern and reflected how we felt about the projectOver a period of several months, we went through a number of different stages developing the new name; ranging from initial ideas of the feelings the name should evoke to what connotations it should have. After narrowing the choice down, an internal vote decided the new name:
Zikula, pronounced zi-kool-ah, formed from several Zulu words, where "Zila ukudla" means fast and "Lula" means easy. These are two attributes of Zikula which we wish to emphasize, it is both fast and easy to use Zikula as a framework for your web solutions.
Please update your bookmarks - our new main site is located at zikula.org, with the community site at community.zikula.org.
We wish to use this as an opportunity to expand our community, introducing many more people to Zikula as a product and as a tool for the rapid development of complex web solutions.
In light of this, we will very shortly be releasing Zikula 1.0, formerly PostNuke 0.8. The development team is very excited at the new horizons created by Zikula 1.0. With your help, Zikula 1.0 will be at the forefront of Open Source Application Frameworks for years to come. PostNuke will have existed for 7 years this July, please help us put Zikula at the forefront of web technology in the future.
Finally, to finish, thank you to Strategic Name Development for assisting us in developing the new name, and Vanessa for contacting them in the first place. We'd also like to thank Karl Pütz for redesigning the themes for the main and community sites ready for today. He's also developed a general theme that will be made available to those who run international community support websites.
Those who run international support sites should be aware the Software Foundation currently holds major international domains and we will point the name servers at established communities. If you are interested in this, please email simon -[-at-]- zikula -[-dot-]- org. Due to an email issue old applications have unfortunately been lost, I apologize for this!
A press release is available on BusinessWire which can be forwarded to news organizations outside America.

@Lobos - sure you can Digg It!
You can also use Zikula to 'dig out' a great foundation for your site or 'dig out' your niche online.
I don't see 'dig out' or 'dig up' as having a negative connotation. What do our local Sumbwan users think? BTW: do we have any?

Well it sure is unusual - I think It is going to require for more explanation than it needs - who knows maybe those digressions will be fruitful. And here I thought the name might/would reflect what the software does. [and if you tell me it does cause it is digging our data out of the database I'll throw up.]And I would get over any of the funny remarks folks might make Like:
...is there a Count Zikula?
...Zinikulee, Zikula, Zinikulee Zikula Ha Ha Ha (Like the song - Funicular ha ha ha )
And whatever else you might come up with. Fun can be a good spring board.
Do You Zikula?
I can Zikula IT.
Zikula - The Last Word in the Web Frameworks.
I mean no disrespect - I guess I am just trying to get used to it. Here We Go Zikula!

@TakeIT2: Well our first choice was "OpenPHPWebapplicationDevelopmentFramework" but namedevelopment told us that this would be regarded a too long name in some underdeveloped cultures.17. jaenosjelantru wrote on Jun 05, 2008 at 11:53 PM

And so the Registration race begins!
20. nestormateo wrote on Jun 06, 2008 at 12:42 AM
Yeah, completely unusual.the good point is the completely new air that it give us,
and we should give it the identity that we want
the logo is too flexible about colors,
so i vote for unusual good colors too: yellow+green? XD
IMO we must have a singular palette
no similar with other Web Framework out there..
just my 0.02

Please note the name has a world wide trademark and we will publish a brand manual explaining the usage requirments for both the name and logo.
In general though - the logo should only use the logo colors, scaling must retain original proportions, additional text shouldn't be added to be part of the logo, and it shouldn't be modifed.

It's uglyBut at least it's announced and times of waiting are gone
Time for release 1.0
23. Simon wrote on Jun 06, 2008 at 01:59 AM
Unfortunately we never expected to satisfy everyone - but so far we've had much more positive feedback than negative. Give the name a chance, it may grow on you. If not, anything's better than PN.24. Jusuff wrote on Jun 06, 2008 at 02:02 AM
Simon - I knew that new name wont satisfy everyone. Just hoped that I'll like itBut - as I wrote before - good that is done

Ya ok that works for me. Thanks to all who have contributed to the end of the 'Nuke'.

Congrats team, thanks for the hard work and finally ending the era of Nuke. Absolutely the new name seems to be very vibrant and quite different. It may not satisfy every body's desire but this change had to be made. Now waiting for the release of the 1.0 version. The naming and releasing the new version have not been Zikula.

Don't know if I like the name or not... but it's not the name of the project I've come to depend on, it's what's under the hood that matters most.

zikula.us for instance

Zikula.us, along with a large number of other related domain names, is owned by the zikula software foundation.

Congratulations - the re-branding has been prepared and organized very professionally by the team.As with all successful brands, my personal taste and feeling does not count. Most people I confronted with name/logo have been excited, so I guess it's fine.
Together with the upcoming 1.0 release, the new SVN + Trac, the fresh projects with support from GSOC we have all the tools to go for world domination.
Greetings,
Chris

@czardogs: That was exactly my attitude when I first knew that this was the name. As I was involved in the process of finding it, I had some months to get used to it. And now I really like it.

Atila, Caligula, Formicula, the words that will help me remember the name Zikula!Kind of disappointing at the moment, just as with Nintendo console codename Revolution that was renamed into Wii?!! Then few months went by and I started to really like it. Hope that Zikula grows on me too
Congratulations!

Yes but then it wouldn't look like Joomla's logo, and bascially everything about this branding is Joomla... I guess it is the greatest form of flattery...
Sorry couldn't help it... but it would have been nice to see some individuality, basically the whole all branding has been copied (logo/name), doesn't say much for "Strategic Name Development", that they go find the most popular platform in the genre and copy it LOL (hope you didn't pay
40. nestormateo wrote on Jun 07, 2008 at 05:04 PM
Well, check the name+logo with white letters and blue bg:
http://www.dev-postnuke.com/ (sorry, still no zikula.es)
i like that combination,
and now the logo it's a little bit like the Picasa one :p
we must leave behind the black and orange, that's Joomla,
we can build our own identity with that logo and the vibrant zikula name
41. Chipp203 wrote on Jun 08, 2008 at 02:41 AM
The name Joomla is a phonetic spelling for the Swahili word "Jumla", which means "all together" or "as a whole". [Adapted from the Joomla! Web site]
- Zikula's logo colors and concept = very joomlesque
- Phonetically the two words are similar Zikula/Joomla
I'm just worried that it shaking the 'nuke' concept we've picked up another (even worse) stigma....that of 'copy cat'
42. mhalbrook wrote on Jun 08, 2008 at 07:50 AM
I see where you're coming from, and I agree, if the foundation had paid for Strategic Development's services I'd feel ripped off, the name and the logo are very similar to Joomla, but at the same time, it's still different enough. The visual key I see on the Joomla logo is their chain links, on this one, I see the Dodge logo, and Zs.Now I looked at the Wikipedia entry for Zikula and they link to the French & German sites, while I can't read the language, I think their intro page looks better than Zikula.org
43. kaffeeringe.de wrote on Jun 08, 2008 at 01:16 PM
"Zikula" was not their only suggestion and the logo was not the only one Strategic ND suggested. Name and logo were chosen by a group of people that included myself. We didn't choose either because of a resemblance to Joomla. We chose it because the name had a good feeling for us and suited best our ideas of the project. Logos of this kind have a long tradition and you will hardly come to something original that still works as favicon as good as as print on a T-Shirt.
And I agree with Michael: I don't think Zikula (3 syllables and fricative + hard consonant) is further apart from Joomla (2 syllables, softer sound) that PostNuke was from PHPNuke.
44. landofmidnight wrote on Jun 09, 2008 at 02:27 AM
Caligula!
That's what the name reminds me of. And I hate this name. It's not memorable and doesn't roll off the tongue (or the fingers.)
I understand moving away from the *nuke image, but this z-name thing? Really?
45. kaffeeringe.de wrote on Jun 09, 2008 at 11:03 AM
@landofmidnight: Do you think there's one word in the world that is memorable, rolls of the tongue, doesn't rhyme with anything negative and pleases everybody? I am afraid not.46. mhalbrook wrote on Jun 09, 2008 at 07:40 PM
We should have gone with TSFKAPN The System Formerly Known as PostNuke :D47. dennisMe2 wrote on Jun 11, 2008 at 02:02 AM

Congrats to all involved. I'm glad we lost the Nuke!

49. askmike1 wrote on Jun 29, 2008 at 04:57 PM
The logo is generic and the name is so-so (really, how many postnuke/zikula users speak Zulu?) but I'm just happy it's finally here. Content trumps name/logo any day of the week.
50. pptous wrote on Jun 30, 2008 at 03:49 AM
Another 'epic' event @ the PostNuke project. I guess one can only hope that things at PostNuke will get better. Years ago PostNuke lost a good member, since then it never seemed to get back on its feet. Nobody has been waiting for Zikula to come along and save the day, so it is up to the community to do something with it. But believe me, no community, no go. Good luck folks, I respect your ambitions, but optimism for PostNuke is pretty tough to find, regardless what name you hang on it.
